Upcoming Events

This is a very busy weekend, with several events vying for your attention on Friday and Saturday. I plan to attend as many as possible.

If you haven't been paying attention to the events list, you might want to take a look through it today. Lots and lots of new additions. This is the High Season for events!

Due to popular demand, the Men's Discussions are shifting from ONCE a month to TWICE a month.  The purpose of these events is to allow men to bond as friends in an intimate, quiet and safe space where we can open our hearts, share our stories and build long-term friendships while we share wisdom.  It's working exactly as hoped, so now we are all greedy for more.  The schedule shifts a bit while we get it all sorted out, so watch the listings below for accurate dates, times and locations.

-=-=-=-=-=- UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday, September 30, 8:30PM-1AM: MEN-ONLY FRIDAY NIGHT BEAT AND GREET, downtown, hosted by Bryan Teague - American Leatherboy and Mike Underwood - San Diego's very own Curmudgeonly teddy bear. Friday Sept. 30th: CubClub Party at the Brass Rail. The younger folks will be out in force, and I have been watching the rise of CubClub for a while now.  The group provides a way for younger bears and kinky males to meet outside of the usual leather/twink bar scene.

CubClub Party at the Brass Rail, Friday Sept. 30

From: Dangilo Bonilla:

I just wanted to give you a heads up for a CubClub event I'm producing at the Brass Rail on Sept. 30.  We are trying something a bit different and inviting everyone to come out for a good ole night of gay fun: we encourage everyone to come in their gear, have a drink, indulge, and dance their asses off.

SKIN, FUR, GLITTER, LEATHER, and SIN

Cub Club has repeatedly stated that we are a CULTURE, not just a TYPE. On Friday, September 30 we are going to let the fur (& glitter) fly! Ned Cato's Cub Club has teamed up with Dangilo (@uberglitterati) to present a night for CLUB KIDS, Leather Cubs, Gender Fuckers, Fashion Killers and beyond.

The Brass Rail will be bumping with a meld of Super Eletro Pop, Acid Rock, Dance, Remixes, and Party Jams. A little something for everyone, and you are encouraged to strut, pose, and show off your gear (and possibly some skin)

This Month; the color, attitude, and general fabulousness will be in excess with CUB CLUB's resident Diva; GRACE TOWERS along with the always exciting DISCO DOLLIE, GLITZ GLAM, & LADY O!

The masculine and fur edge will be "brought'en" by CUB CLUB's GOGO MAX & DAVID up on the boxes with San Diego's favorite new PORN star PRESTON STEEL! Don't forget to get yo drink on with Shot Specials on the floor and at the side bar with GOGO ANTHONY! All of our boys will be outfitted in sport, rocker, and leather gear styled by LUIGI VERA: One of a Kind Clothing (www.luigivera.com)

-=-=-=-=-=- BEARQUAKE IN SAN DIEGO

I haven't been paying close-enough attention - Bearquake is in mid-October, hosted by our own Bears San Diego. This used to be called SunBears Weekend, but now that it is a multi-club event covering all of Southern California, it is now called BearQuake. The explanation is here. I expect to be at a few events, sniffing and nuzzling and sharing some hugs!

-=-=-=-=- FOLSOM WEEKEND

A lot of men will be out of town this weekend, since Folsom Street Fair is this Sunday. The days leading up to it in San Francisco will be crazy-busy, with men in full gear wandering the streets looking for trouble, and shopping their butts off at Stompers and Mister S.  I'll be in San Diego, myself - Gotta restrict the expenditures leading up to refinancing, but my thoughts will be with everybody up in the City.

-=-=-=-=-=- CIGARS & BOOTS

I think that my favorite part of the Cigars & Boots monthly event (coming up in a week and a half) is the quality of the men attending it.  The best word that I could use is "amiable" - It's a no-pressure, no-attitude event, and the more times that somebody attends, the more blissed-out they get. You're going to laugh, but Facebook deleted this picture from a previous cigars event, because it offended somebody. Now, really - Have you EVER seen such a blissfully happy face? Miles is the very capable host, and here is his message for October:

October is coming up so that means it's time for October's Cigar and Boots
October 2nd, 5pm @ Redwing

Hey folks, Miles here,
We're having another cigar social Oct. 2nd @ 5pm.  Hopefully, you'll be able to swing by  and hangout some.  Come kick back, smoke a few and tell some stories

For anyone who hasn't been to our monthly social,  It's a great time to relax and chat with friends.
Also if you're looking to make some new contacts and meet new people, you should definitely stop by. Don't come to impress though, everyone is really chill and down to earth.  Even if you don't smoke there's plenty of space to spread out and socialize.

Redwing will have their Sunday beer bust again.  Some folks takes advantage of by coming early to enjoy the Redwing's beer bust from 2p-6p.
Hope to see you there
-=-=-=-=- NEWEST GROUP PHOTO

I goofed last week, and forgot to make the most-recent group photo from the Dress It Up event easier to find.  Here ya go, and enjoy!

-=-=-=-=- PALM SPRINGS LEATHER PRIDE UPDATES

The good folks at Palm Springs Leather Order of the Desert (PSLOD) have been busy passing around the newest news about Palm Springs Leather Pride.  It's worth attending, so check it out!  Our own local champion Mr. San Diego Leather 2010 and 2nd runner up for International Mr. Leather 2011 Anthony will be one of the judges!

-=-=-=-=- BIG SALE AT THE CRYPT

The Crypt (all stores, such as 30thPark, and in Long Beach) are having quite a big sale, ending September 30th. They are seriously looking to clear out some inventory! Here's what I saw:

Stop by this month and check out our Sale! All leather items including clothing & BDSM gear are 20% off,  All DVDs $19.99 and up are 30% off,  and All Elbow Grease and Fusion Lubes are 10% off.

You will definitely want to print this image out and take it even for even more of a discount.

Palm Springs Leather Pride 2011

We hope that you've had a great summer, full of everything Leather!  It seemed to go by so quickly here in Palm Springs because now it's less than 9 weekends before Palm Springs Leather Pride and we're hard at work putting on all the final touches to what is shaping up to be another hot, sexy event.  Take a look at what's on the schedule:

Thursday, 11/10/11
Hunter's Meet & Greet - Meet the meat and then dance and cruise the night away in one of the largest gay nightclubs in Palm Springs.

Friday, 11/11/11
Once again we'll have our Formal Leather Dinner at the fantastic Leon's that you all raved about last year.  This time around they are in a
new location but still have that great ambiance and, again, a fantastic menu planned.  And this time you'll get Call level liquors included!
Following the dinner get on your cruise gear and head over to the Tool Shed/PSLOD Back Lot Cruise Party and Vendor Market.  After the huge success of last year, with around 1000 people checking out the goods, we're adding more bartenders, more heaters and more
        outdoor restrooms.

Saturday, 11/12/11
We've added a BRAND NEW event this year.  DiGS bar and Maximus have teamed up to create a Cigar/Pipe Smoker!  It will include special
drink prices, a BBQ just for our package holders and, vending some of the best leather in the US, Off Ramp Leather.
After your cigar we've left you time to rest up and get ready for the Recon Mr. Palm Springs Leather Contest and Victory Dark Dance,
again held at the fabulous Palm Springs Convention Center, but this year we're taking over the Grand Concourse with all the breathtaking
        vista's that it offers.
This year our esteemed judging panel includes (in alphabetical order)

Sunday, 11/13/11
It's time for the cool down as our weekend ends with the Elbow Grease Pool Party/BBQ with it's infamous Soaked T-shirt Contest.
        Clothing optional of course.

And, while we have upped the ante again on what we're offering you this year, we've kept the price exactly the same as last year, only $99!  So, take a moment today and check out all the details and purchase your tickets at http://desertleatherpride.com

See you in November!

-=-=-=-=-=- A FOLSOM STREET FAIR PRIMER

A great article from Leatherati:

A Folsom Street Fair Primer

-=-=-=-=-=- A PIECE OF LEATHER HISTORY COMES BACK TO SAN DIEGO

Years ago, San Diego featured multiple leathermen's bars. One was Wolf's, which was on the corner of 30th and Upas. Here is the logo that they used.  They had legendary Back Room Parties, due to the unique way that the bar was built. You were only allowed into the Back Room if you were in fetish gear or were willing to take your shirt off. It was a great bar, and it was no big deal to have 400 men come through the bar on a typical Friday night, back in the days before the Internet killed off most of the leather bars in the world. This place was CROWDED, hot, sweaty, cruisy and intense.

As more and more men started finding their playmates online, the bar suffered, and it became a tax write-off for the owner toward the end, since there was only one busy night per month. They were losing money like crazy!  Once the wealthy, absent landlord died (he lived in Palm Springs and owned many bars across Southern California), Wolfs shut down.  The old-school decorations inside the bar (posters, gear, artwork and toys) vanished overnight, and eventually Wolf's dimmed in most people's memory.

Years later, a home in Palm Springs went into foreclosure. California Leather Sir 2010 Todd Bishop is a real estate agent (and a serious pumper - He hosts the annual Monster Manhood Weekend). He tells the next part of the story:

The story isnt very juicy, it's sort of sad how the sign came into our possession. The recession took a great toll on many once sturdy American Households. I, Todd Bishop, a realtor for Keller Williqams Reallty , Rancho Mirage, California see this all the time.  Many of our families including leather families suddenly found their homes upside down, worthless , with huge mortgages  and illnesses forced them to short sale their homes or be forced into foreclosure. A Beloved Leatherman in our community from San Diego went back to take care of his Mother In Palm Springs who had Cancer. Her illness forced her to short sale her Home. He'd been storing a lot of leather history Items there in her home.

Our Leather buddy  packed up his belongings along with his mothers and they moved back east in a 30 foot Uhaul with the dogs and Mom in the cab, and all their belongings in the truck, once the house sold.  Many things didn't all fit on the truck. There was a  classic Eagle Poster from probably 20 years ago along with this historic leaded glass sign from the San Diego Leather Association which I remember hanging in Wolf's Bar on the back wall for at least 25 years that I rescued. The San Diego National Leather Association was part of the National Leather Association which is a Pansexual Leather association which has chapters all over. I was told our San Diego chapter has now become Club X.

The Leather sign is a great piece of Leather history. It's very important to Support Your local Leather Bars. We don't want them to become History too, it's better to make history in them. Plan an event or Support the events at  Your Local Leather Bars. In the Picture is Mike Rush, California Leather Boy 2011, Todd Bishop, California Leather Sir 2011 (center) and Nicolas- (owner of the SD Eagle.)

I was invited to attend Uniform Night at the Eagle this last Saturday night, since Todd wanted me to be there for his presentation of an old sign that used to be part of San Diego's leather history. I didn't think much about it, but I wanted to keep my word, so I showed up, not knowing what to expect. To my gleeful surprise, the sign was superb, and lit up for the first time in decades, because Todd re-did the lighting inside for the presentation. When Todd asked Nicholas if he wanted to keep the sign in the bar or maybe donate it to some other group, all of the men in the bar yelled out "KEEP IT!"

So, a nice, classy part of our local history has made it back home again, where it belongs.  Check it out at an upcoming event.

-=-=-=-=- LOCAL SOURCE FOR WOODEN PADDLES

From Papa Tony:

The boys and I thoroughly enjoyed the Dore Alley Street fair back in late July, but somehow the three of us scouring the hotel-room missed my favorite Cocobolo-wood paddle (in the center of this photo), so it got left behind.  In my search to find a replacement, I was referred to Chris, who has provided me with an excellent, sturdy Bocote-wood eighteen-inch paddle. Here is what it looks like, tucked inside my tall boot.  I always like to keep a paddle with me at all times, in case I'm ever stuck up  s h i t  creek! :->

From: Chris

Making paddles started out as a way for me to give gifts to friends when I was unemployed. It was a tough time in my life, and I was down in the dumps rather often. I found myself relaxing and able to let my mind wander when I started working with wood. Each piece “talks” to me. I don’t design paddles and then go out and buy wood. I pick what I feel are unique pieces, and let the wood dictate the way it is going to be cut. Wood has energy about it, even paddles that look similar feel different in your hands.

I have had many people tell me that I need to have my own website up and start a real business, but to me that makes it no longer a hobby…but a job. I have been making paddles for about eleven years now, and have recently added wood canes to my inventory. I like to stress to people who have a fear of paddles that they don’t have to hurt, but can be very sensual as well. Fortunately, there are some very exotic woods available that make many wood paddles a piece of art as well: cocobolo, snake wood, bocote, tulip wood, and lignum vitae.  People buy them because they are beautifully variegated and nice to look at, have wonderful markings or because of the hardness and different impacts. Never are two exactly the same as nature designs each wood differently. I like to showcase the beauty of the natural wood, so I never stain my pieces, but instead clear coat them.

I vend at several events in San Diego, including Pride, and am willing to meet privately to show what I currently have in stock. I’ve been involved in the BDSM community for over 20 years and never cease to be amazed at the level of spirituality and love that has always present when one is open to it.

I take a lot of pride in my work, and get a lot of joy knowing that those who are using my paddles are enjoying them as much as I like making them!
