Playing Games, Providing Toys For Underprivileged Children

Note from Tony: I met Daniel at Kurt's fundraiser, and I was deeply impressed.  It's not often that you meet such a dedicated, hard-working community volunteer and leader. I'm surprised that I haven't met him until now. I hope to see him more often at upcoming events. He deserves a lot of really good new friends.

May 9, 2012, 6:30-9:30PM (Second Wednesday of each month

Here is a bit about I Play4Charity.org I was telling you about:

IPlay4Charity.Org - The Beginning

7yrs ago I would go out with friends or dates to Dave and Busters for fun, and ended up collecting the tickets I won. It was around Christmas that I decided to cash in all my tickets for a whole bunch of stuffed animals for Charity to give to Toys for Tots. Walking out with 3 big garbage bags of toys gave me that fuzzy feeling, and it set in what Christmas should really be about, giving without need of receiving. The holidays were always a mixed bag for me, with all of the commercialization. Being Jewish, the unsettling feeling of receiving and not having a gift to give in return. So, giving to Toys for Tots for Christmas became the way I wanted to celebrate every year.

In 2009, I invited Bo Andras from the Pride Card and a small group of friends to play and try and get more tickets to get some more toys. Bo loved the idea and adopted the concept to have the Pride Card present what became IPlay4Charity.org. We meet on the second Wednesday of the Month, as a non-bar event to socialize and play games while people donated their tickets, that went to provide toys in and outside our community with Family Matters and Toys For Tots.

In 2010, our first organized year, we exceeded my goal of 400,000 tickets, and we provided over 1,600 toys throughout the year as needed from the Family Matters Treasure Hunt in the Spring, to the Children's Garden at Pride, and our main event to Toys For Tots in December. We also got Dave & Busters to match 5% of our tickets. Toys For Tots even provided Marines at our events as Pride Card businesses even donated merchandise to give to the person who donated the most tickets for each event.

IPlay4Charity has become a great success, providing toys for underprivileged children, while socializing and having fun at the same time, ticket donations have exceeded well over 1 million to date. These are great nights and a good break in the week that go from 6:30 - 9:30p. Dave and Busters offers Eat and Play Meals starting at 15.99 that includes a $10 Powerplay card.

Next Event is May 9th, 2012, become a fan on Facebook, or check to see your recognition and total points donated on the IPlay4Charity.org website.

Come be a part of the giving experience, and see what A CHARITY EXPERIENCE is all about.

Review of Sunday's Fundraiser for Kurt

On Sunday, April 22nd 2011, 75 or so of us gathered to send Kurt off to Chicago with our blessings and a bit more cash. Mr. San Diego Leather 2011 Kurt is going to represent San Diego in Chicago at the International Mr. Leather 2012 Contest at the end of May. He needs help paying for the trip - Hotel rooms are $280 per night for six nights, plus airfare!

So, Dutch was kind enough to loan the use of his beautiful canyon back yard at the Pink Palace near Balboa Park:

There were volunteers at every side, helping to flip burgers, serve drinks, gather money at the entrance, or sell raffle tickets.  There was a lot of love for our Kurt, but the biggest contributor was Mr. San Diego Leather 2010 Anthony, who hosted this year's event in gratitude to Kurt for hosting the same fundraiser last year in his honor.

That's Kurt on the left, and Anthony on the right.

The place was bustling with good will and happy laughter, and the fundraiser brought Kurt closer to being fully recompensed for the trip.  I asked Kurt for his overview of the event, and here was his reply:

The setting was beautiful (thank you Dutch), the event came off without a hitch (thank you Anthony Rollar and volunteers Wish, Pup Dizzy, Preston, Dan and Deric) and the day exceeded expectation. There was a warmth that emanated from the crowd, that flowed freely throughout the day. It was a chance to mix, mingle, love, support and share time with a beautiful and vibrant group.

The day was a bit overwhelming for a moment as I walked down the stairs looking at a huge group of people that have each, individually touched my life. That weekend was a milestone as it was the two year anniversary of my move to San Diego. I knew one person when I moved here and I was thrilled to be looking across a lawn full of smiling faces that I know and love. Faces that I see week in and week out as I go about my day on personal errands as well as the numerous community events and fundraisers I proudly support as Mr. San Diego Leather 2011.

Thank you everyone. There are no words to express my gratitude for your care, guidance, love and support. I am still in the afterglow of the energy everyone brought to the BBQ and also the good wishes that continue to come. My Journey continues as one of the most important moments of my life approaches by competing at IML 34 in my hometown Chicago. Every forward step I take is powered by the people here in my life.

In my original write-up beforehand, I described this event as the ideal opportunity to meet the finest kinds of kinky leather folk, and I told the truth - There were faces in this crowd whom I haven't seen very much of lately, but who have done much good for our community over the years. Even better, I saw some new folks in the crowd who had heard that this was the place to be, and came running!

Upcoming Events

-=-=-=-=- BIG SOCIAL WHOOP-DE-DOO THIS SUNDAY

Just as a reminder, if you want to do something very, very nice for somebody who deserves it, check out Kurt's Fundraiser at Dutch's House this Sunday. I can't stress it enough - If you want to find out where the best folks in San Diego can be found, then this is THE event to attend. A lot of these people don't normally show up in public much, but when they do, it's a rare opportunity to rub elbows and get to know them as friends.

-=-=-=-=- TIME TO BE PROUD OF THE EAGLE

I'm not affiliated with the San Diego Eagle - Never have been, never will. I promote the bar's events because it fills an important need in our community. It's not just Sir Nicholas (the owner) who is responsible for the bar's resurgence; it's also the incredible team of employees, volunteers, patrons and titleholders who are keeping the old, kinky ways going the way that we like it.

Down below, you will see a bunch of events held at the Eagle. These are proactive events that get folks excited and involved. I have been attending a good number of them to see what is the current state of San Diego's sole remaining leather bar, and I'm greatly pleased.

If you've given up on the Eagle because it didn't suit your needs before, you really owe it to yourself to step out and try out the special events on my list.  Chris Owen (the event coordinator for the Eagle) has been a turbocharged dynamo, building these events into rather exciting gatherings that bring out the crowds. Whatever he is being paid, he's worth it.  When you combine the amiable vibe that we have in San Diego, with horny men in various gear (and rather less), then the Eagle can be quite a congenial place to be.

Seriously - Let go of your old preconceptions, and check out the specialty nights such as the STUD NIGHT this Friday, and any of the others - If I list them, they are worth attending. I tried out UNIFORM NIGHT and it brought in quite a few men in gear (not just uniforms). I was thoroughly impressed.  I sure got a lot of hugs that night, too!

-=-=-=-=-=- JOHN WATERS MOVIE THIS WEDNESDAY

If you're not familiar with the movies of John Waters, then you seriously need a good friend to corrupt your sensibilities properly.  I've raised six foster kids (my youngest is about to turn 28) and at some point in their development as young adults, I have always made sure to get them acquainted with classic, twisted movies such as HairsprayPolyester (I still have a pile of Odorama cards around here somewhere) and Serial Mom. Once older, they all got to see the Trash Trilogy - Pink Flamingos (I own a movie poster signed by John Waters, Mink Stole and Cookie Mueller), Desperate Living and Female Trouble

These movies all share a common theme - Outsiders coming up against repression, only to win in the end by living out and proud of their deviance. I think that this is a healthy moral lesson, well worth learning.

Tomorrow (Wednesday the 18th of April), I will be at the Birch North Park Theater at 6:45PM SHARP, handing out free tickets to the 7PM showing of Cry-Baby, for the benefit of my readers here on the list. It's still one of the most transgressive, outrageous films you will ever see. Kim "Hatchetface" McGuire is a marvel, taking over the job of John Waters' wild woman after Divine died. I can't believe that it has been almost thirty years since I first saw Cry-Baby in the theater!
