"Meanings, Uses and Mis-uses of Pain" lecture with Dr. John McConnell

Wednesday, February 19, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

About this presentation

This 90-minute workshop will cover pain-play from the biological, evolutionary, and psychological perspectives. The meanings of pain in Western Culture has morphed over the centuries. In the late 20th century, the (then named) BDSM community fixated on the simple idea that the endorphin high explains why people enjoy pain-play. This focus came at the expense of exploring more complex emotional motivations related to the places pain-players go inside their heads. As pain play moves from gentle to intense, players move through complex emotional and mental states which gives their play deeper meaning. These meanings give a fuller understanding of motivations which are adaptive and healthy, leading to the conclusion that pain-play can be synergistic with deep loving relationships.

The last part of this talk looks at the shadow sides of physical and psychological pain, which is how they can erupt unwanted or be consciously abused in relationships. Most often psychological pain between partners is not intentional. What does pain mean, here, when it is neither wanted nor useful? When pain is mis-used then at least one of the partners feels worse about their self: they feel de-valued. This is the exact opposite of healthy erotic pain which leaves both partners feeling more valued by both self and other.


About our presenter

Dr. McConnell is a Psychologist, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and an Adjunct Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology (PSY100673.)  He has a private GSRD-affirming practice in Hillcrest. He supervises two Interns who provide therapy on a sliding fee. About half his clients are in complex relationships such as poly or D/s. He also provides individual counseling for clients dealing with such typical issues as depression, anxiety, life transitions, conflicts at work, and inner financial health. Licensed in 1987, for 30 years Dr. McConnell has given presentations to both professional and community audiences on Gender, Relationship and Sexual Diversity (GSRD).

SD Leather Community Awards 2019 voting ends Saturday, 15 February 2020.

Saturday, 15 February 2020, is the last day to vote in the San Diego Leather Community Awards for 2019.

Three FMSD men (Jody Mitchell, Myles Ramos, and Scott B. Smith) are nominated in the "Man of the Year" catagory plus Anthony "Papa Tony" Lindsey for the "Lifetime Achievement" award.

I was stunned and humbled when I learned I was nominated for the Man of the Year award. Once I got over that, I was elated to learn at least one person values my service and contributions to FMSD and the San Diego Leather Community since 2012 to take time out of their life to write something about me and what I've done. I'm grateful that I'm able to be of service and contribute to the San Diego Leather community and FMSD by providing photography and behind the scenes support.

I'm fortunate to have photographed so many title competitions (Mr. San Diego Eagle, Mr. and Ms. SD Leather & Bootblack, Bear San Diego, SoCal Drummer and others), special events (flag raising/lowering, fundraiser, homecomings, and Leather title anniversaries), and individual photography (some of which is used as contestant headshots).

Also, I'm grateful to lead the team that makes the FMSD demos, discussions, socials, and workshops happen. We've put the time and effort into consistently creating at least one, and usually two, events each month. I'm especially grateful for the presenters and facilitators in the community who have a "can do" and "yes" attitude.

Please consider the nomination criteria before you cast your vote. I look forward to seeing you on the other side of my lens at the SDLCA ceremony, Saturday, 29 February 2020, 6-10pm, at Urban Mo's.

  • Woman of the Year is also a very tight one; 
  • Volunteer of the Year is a tight one for two individuals; 
  • Business of the Year is in a two way tie;

In 2020, FMSD will meet the 4th Saturday of the month, noon till 4pm at a private venue where we can wear what we like and do the things presented in workshops, demos, and discussions. We will continue to meet the 3rd Wednesday, 7-9pm, upstairs at Pleasures & Treasures for discussions, demos, and lectures.

Men, you are invited to show up with food/drinks, towel, gear, floggers, a desire to learn and do, and be open to doing the thing(s) that is/are taught and/or having the things that were taught done to you.

This private venue has a great outdoor space, pictured below, and seats many comfortably. Enjoy the comfortable seating around the fire pit, the hot tub next to the naturally hated pool, and additional seating around a table and bar (which is great for spreading out the food and refreshments) at the rear of the yard. Open, uncovered, space along one side of the yard provides an unlimited ceiling should that be desired.


Flogging 101

This will be a 101 level class aimed at those who are new to the magic of the flogger. We will cover safety during play, the anatomy of floggers, types of floggers, and different throwing techniques. The goal is for everyone to learn basic practical techniques to begin practicing during the workshop and to take home to practice and play confidently and safely. There will be demonstrations accompanied by ongoing explanation, as well as guided practice time. If you’re looking for an opportunity to throw a flogger for the first time with an experienced guide, wanting to try what it feels like in a safe controlled environment, or just looking for information before diving into the pool, come have some fun!


About our presenter:

Travis is a Dominant, Leather Man, Daddy and a proud member of the House of AndOr. He considers it an honor and a duty to pass on what knowledge he has been given and is grateful for the opportunity to meet leather folk all over the country. His specialties are Florentine flogging and single tails, however nothing puts a smile on his face like a good mind fuck. His other classes include humiliation, taboo age play, and struggle play.

He serves on the Board and participates as both volunteer and ambassador for the Leather Realm at San Diego Pride. He teaches a bi-monthly flogging 101 workshop, is the host the monthly X-plore for Club X, and has taught at many conferences across the US.
