Watt Wednesday (9/16)

Kink Exhibition Video for Virtual Leather Realm 2020 is now on the FMSD website

Detailed message -- 
As you know, big social events we look forward to are canceled. Fortunately technology exists that allow us to connect with each other without being in close physical proximity with each other. Examples include the socials and discussions FMSD, and other groups, have had via Zoom over the past several months. 

San Diego Pride 2020 was last weekend and even though there was not a large gathering of people and the festival grounds were not set up, Leather Realm ran several Zoom sessions both Saturday and Sunday. On both days, at noon, the video of images FMSD made was shown. 

Where did the images come from? Several weeks ago a call went out to FMSD to send the images of kink they'd like included in the video. We used what was sent and filled in with images from Scott's / SmithBeard's library of images from FMSD and other local San Diego events since 2012. 

Where did the music come from? Our own John Maynard created the music. Why is this name familiar? He ran a nightly series of music and singing, called "No One Should Be Alone", for 80 of the first 90 days of physical distancing when COVID-19 hit us.

Connection, physical touch, all the things gay men have repeatedly been told not to do en masse—for various reasons—in the last fifty years; they are being told not to do again. Refreshingly so is everyone else this time, but still.

Ironically this virus, while capable of being deadly to anyone of any age or gender, is most dangerous to the survivors of the last epidemic—older men with compromised immune systems. As with any epidemic, the toll isn’t merely on the physical health of the infected, it is on the mental health of us all. What's more, evidence suggests that it is men aged 18 to 43 who are finding these isolating times the most challenging.

Given all that, we thought who better to talk to than someone who has more than a few times in his life, in more than a few ways, helped to lead his people - leathermen and kinksters, through difficult times—Guy Baldwin.

We’ll speak to Guy from his home in LA, and pick his brains on how we get through this without making it worse for ourselves, as we once again deal not only with managing our own needs and the risks we’re prepared to take to meet them, but also vastly diverse views on what constitutes responsible, respectful behavior and what doesn’t.

FMSD - "Rope for Capture" w/boy doriam

Rope is nice to look at and feels great, but when you're ready to take someone down and use their hole(s), there just isn't enough time for the pretty shit.
Join boy doriam in this class for take down play and aggressive style rope, inspired by Hojojutsu, used to capture the bottom and keep them there. This class will cover two basic knots and several hitches used for quick and dirty rope and how to safely and securely bind your bottom.

*note: Class will be divided into theory and practical application, please be prepared to tie/be tied by bringing rope and/or stretching before the class itself.

Bio - boy doriam

boy doriam is a LatinX, Poly, Homosexual, Panromantic, Leatherman and Full-time College student by day, and by night he is ALSO a Full-time college because college is hard. He’s been active in San Diego's community since 2015 as a member of Club X (2016-Present), President of Fetish Men San Diego (2016-2018) Co-Founder and Headmeister of Ledermore (2019-present), and Producer of SCALE Weekend (@SCALE_Weekend). In 2018 he represented the San Diego community as Mr. San Diego Leather and the boy traveled sampling conferences nationwide, and bringing back his learnings.


He now is incredibly fortunate and thankful to continue travelling across the country to conferences and events teaching a variety of classes between hard skills, soft skills, and discussion panels. boy doriam was honored with being the 2019 Man of the Year during the San Diego Leather Community Awards, and was a Pantheon of Leather nominee the same year.

About this presentation

This 90-minute workshop will cover pain-play from the biological, evolutionary, and psychological perspectives. The meanings of pain in Western Culture has morphed over the centuries. In the late 20th century, the (then named) BDSM community fixated on the simple idea that the endorphin high explains why people enjoy pain-play. This focus came at the expense of exploring more complex emotional motivations related to the places pain-players go inside their heads. As pain play moves from gentle to intense, players move through complex emotional and mental states which gives their play deeper meaning. These meanings give a fuller understanding of motivations which are adaptive and healthy, leading to the conclusion that pain-play can be synergistic with deep loving relationships.

The last part of this talk looks at the shadow sides of physical and psychological pain, which is how they can erupt unwanted or be consciously abused in relationships. Most often psychological pain between partners is not intentional. What does pain mean, here, when it is neither wanted nor useful? When pain is mis-used then at least one of the partners feels worse about their self: they feel de-valued. This is the exact opposite of healthy erotic pain which leaves both partners feeling more valued by both self and other.


About our presenter

Dr. McConnell is a Psychologist, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and an Adjunct Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology (PSY100673.)  He has a private GSRD-affirming practice in Hillcrest. He supervises two Interns who provide therapy on a sliding fee. About half his clients are in complex relationships such as poly or D/s. He also provides individual counseling for clients dealing with such typical issues as depression, anxiety, life transitions, conflicts at work, and inner financial health. Licensed in 1987, for 30 years Dr. McConnell has given presentations to both professional and community audiences on Gender, Relationship and Sexual Diversity (GSRD).
