-=-=-=-=- BIG SOCIAL WHOOP-DE-DOO THIS SUNDAY
Just as a reminder, if you want to do something very, very nice for somebody who deserves it, check out Kurt's Fundraiser at Dutch's House this Sunday. I can't stress it enough - If you want to find out where the best folks in San Diego can be found, then this is THE event to attend. A lot of these people don't normally show up in public much, but when they do, it's a rare opportunity to rub elbows and get to know them as friends.
-=-=-=-=- TIME TO BE PROUD OF THE EAGLE
I'm not affiliated with the San Diego Eagle - Never have been, never will. I promote the bar's events because it fills an important need in our community. It's not just Sir Nicholas (the owner) who is responsible for the bar's resurgence; it's also the incredible team of employees, volunteers, patrons and titleholders who are keeping the old, kinky ways going the way that we like it.
Down below, you will see a bunch of events held at the Eagle. These are proactive events that get folks excited and involved. I have been attending a good number of them to see what is the current state of San Diego's sole remaining leather bar, and I'm greatly pleased.
If you've given up on the Eagle because it didn't suit your needs before, you really owe it to yourself to step out and try out the special events on my list. Chris Owen (the event coordinator for the Eagle) has been a turbocharged dynamo, building these events into rather exciting gatherings that bring out the crowds. Whatever he is being paid, he's worth it. When you combine the amiable vibe that we have in San Diego, with horny men in various gear (and rather less), then the Eagle can be quite a congenial place to be.
Seriously - Let go of your old preconceptions, and check out the specialty nights such as the STUD NIGHT this Friday, and any of the others - If I list them, they are worth attending. I tried out UNIFORM NIGHT and it brought in quite a few men in gear (not just uniforms). I was thoroughly impressed. I sure got a lot of hugs that night, too!
If you're not familiar with the movies of John Waters, then you seriously need a good friend to corrupt your sensibilities properly. I've raised six foster kids (my youngest is about to turn 28) and at some point in their development as young adults, I have always made sure to get them acquainted with classic, twisted movies such as Hairspray, Polyester (I still have a pile of Odorama cards around here somewhere) and Serial Mom. Once older, they all got to see the Trash Trilogy - Pink Flamingos (I own a movie poster signed by John Waters, Mink Stole and Cookie Mueller), Desperate Living and Female Trouble.
These movies all share a common theme - Outsiders coming up against repression, only to win in the end by living out and proud of their deviance. I think that this is a healthy moral lesson, well worth learning.
Tomorrow (Wednesday the 18th of April), I will be at the Birch North Park Theater at 6:45PM SHARP, handing out free tickets to the 7PM showing of Cry-Baby, for the benefit of my readers here on the list. It's still one of the most transgressive, outrageous films you will ever see. Kim "Hatchetface" McGuire is a marvel, taking over the job of John Waters' wild woman after Divine died. I can't believe that it has been almost thirty years since I first saw Cry-Baby in the theater!
